EXPRESS YOUR, SELF.
Last Weekend - I joined Jae Joseph and the curating team of MOBI (Mobilizing Our Brother Initiative) for their showcase 'Masc Off' Art Party event featuring Artists Jonathan & Jarret Key And Rubby Valentin. Upon entry I was greeted with open arms, while people socialized and gathered at the photowall. While I signed in, I heard the sounds of a Trap / R&B mash-up of Aaliyah X Gucci Mane provided by DJ BMAJR ; a mix that will surely never leave my mind.
MOBI is a collective of Black Gay Men who provide a series of curated social events which promote wellness, and personal development within the community. With so many changes in social economics, Mobi has created platform for the Black Queer community that celebrates the many voices in fashion, music and the arts. Hosting and connecting many individuals through workshops like MOBItalks and recently their MOBIFest's. I, myself, even got to reconnect with some familiar faces like Model B. Hawk Snipes and unfamiliar like the super-charged personality, Eddie Jones, of SlayTV.
Jay And Family Onlooking Jarret; Exchanging Memories & A Great Deal Of Emotions..
The night began with Jonathan And Jarret, twins, who sang a story of their childhood, challenges, and the milestones their Late Grandmother left behind during her golden days. An array or imagery; A projector presented us all with private moments of the grief stricken family. We watched (as if there) as they all exchanged memoirs and cradled one-another. Surprisingly, Jarret recreated these moments live, using his hair as a brush and his voice, an instrument. Following a live musical performance by Rubby, DJ BMAJR spun trap seduced R&B til we couldn't stand; the vibes were on tilt.
I remember thinking to myself about MY family; how Key's personal performance shed light on the traumas we have ALL faced once before as individuals. We are truly family to the same struggle, we are all human beings.
And before you go, let me say that I encourage we all love one another to the best f our abilities, while we are still able..
